Midland man climbs to top of Muscle & Fitness Magazine competition

Just over 10 years ago, Midland resident Steven Sian, 35, began his fitness journey.

At the time, the hard-working husband and father of two was unaware of the impact his new hobby would have on his life, but after years of hard work and dedication, his hobby developed into a passion, and now he is competing in the Mr. Health & Fitness competition in Muscle & Fitness Magazine.

Sian explained his fitness journey began shortly after finishing college. He said after lifting on and off for a while, he grew more passionate about it and decided to start taking his health and fitness routine more seriously.

“After college, I was getting sloppy looking,” said Sian. “I really wanted to get back into some type of shape and I had to start somewhere. I don’t really have any particular weight goal; I just enjoy the daily grind and it’s become part of my life now, so I don’t plan on stopping.”

He lifts at several facilities throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region, including Coops out of Saginaw, Hometown Fitness in Auburn, and Planet Fitness in Midland.

Sian said he has learned many things throughout his years of training, such as that a healthy diet is key because “you can’t out train a bad diet,” and not to get discouraged when results are not instant. He said the hardest part is staying dedicated and keeping diets and routines that work.

Now, Sian shares his fitness tips and helps people with their fitness journey through his Facebook page titled Steve Sian Gym Tips and Workout Routines. He shared he has had several people tell him that his tips have inspired them to start their own journey.

“I have gained a lot of positives from my years of training. Obviously, better health and physique are great advantages, but I have also met some great friends along the way that have taught me a lot. It’s also taken me out of my comfort zone a bit and has gotten me to interact with more people and start conversations,” Sian said.

His most recent endeavor has really pushed him out of his comfort zone though, and that is entering the 2021 Mr. Health & Fitness Competition for his first time.

Muscle & Fitness Magazine runs this contest annually and contestants advance based on the number of online votes they receive. Free votes are available daily and additional votes can be purchased, and a significant amount of the money is donated to Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors.

The winner of the contest receives the title of Mr. Health & Fitness, a $20,000 cash prize and will be featured in a two-page feature story in the nationwide publication.

“This is my first time doing anything like this,” Sian said. “I have never been a big ‘look at me’ type of person, and never really thought about my fitness in that sense. I lift and diet for myself, to be healthy, and honestly, I was a bit hesitant to enter this contest, but I figured why not give it a shot. Not to mention, a $20,000 prize and feature story is a great incentive. I may even consider entering more competitions now that I have opened up a little more.”

Sian is currently in third place in his group during this phase of the competition. Voting for the Top 5 ends at 7 p.m. July 8.
